10 WAYS TO MAKE EXERCISE FUN
Did you know that only 23% of American adults are getting the recommended amount of exercise? That’s because a lot of people operate under the assumption that working out is just that -- WORK. But in reality, getting the right amount of exercise every week is not only easy to do, there are hundreds of creative and fun ways you can do it.
Here are our 10 favorite, simple ways to make exercise more fun:
Catch up on your shows
Missed the latest episode of The Bachelor or want to finally start watching Game of Thrones? Watch while you workout. There’s more streaming content now than there’s ever been, so hop on a treadmill and watch on your phone, or put it on while you workout at home. It’ll make your workout go by fast.
Build your own workout
Even if you’re new to fitness, this is a fun one. The internet is a treasure trove of workout ideas and moves that range from easy to difficult. Pick a few movements you want to do (jumping jacks, sit ups and air squats are great for beginners), then set your reps or time limit (for example: 10 reps each 4 times through, or 10 reps each for 20 minutes). You’ll be motivated to finish and challenge yourself.
Create a playlist of motivating songs
Pick your favorite songs that pump you up and make you want to move and create a playlist. You can create a few and change them out each time you workout. Or Spotify has great playlists for running, walking, lifting, and so much more.
Podcasts
If you don’t feel like listening to music, this is a great way to keep your mind distracted while you walk or run. Pop on your favorite podcast and go burn some calories while learning something new.
Phone a friend
It’s no surprise that working out with a friend can boost your motivation and take the boredom out of exercise. Social distancing? Great! Go for a hike or run with a friend and just make sure to stay 6 feet apart.
Go outside
If you’re bored in the gym or working out in your home, then head outdoors for some vitamin D. A lot of exercises can be done outside. And if you’re walking or running, (safely) explore different neighborhoods near you to liven things up.
Buy some new gear
Retail therapy is real, and buying some fresh new workout gear can keep your confidence levels high, especially if you’ve lost weight. Buying new clothes once in a while gives you a great excuse to show them off at the gym or out on a walk.
Follow what excites you
What type of movement makes you happy? The best exercise routines are those that you actually enjoy. Consider workouts like dancing, golf, soccer, or any other sports that bring you joy and make working out seem almost effortless.
Join a class (online or in person)
This is similar to phoning a friend, but amped up. Joining a class breaks up routine and monotony, plus if you’re competitive, it’s a great push to challenge yourself.
Try new things
Routines can be nice, but they can get boring really quick. Switch up your workout routines to keep things interesting. Go for a walk one day, dance around your place the next, take a yoga class. The ideas for a fun, effective workout are endless.
